ARNDT at ART HK 2010: A Letter from Hongkong
von Matthias Arndt

From my first visit at Hongkong International Art Fair 2008 to our first participation in 2009 I can see a clear increase in quality. At ART HK 2010 the quality of the exhibitors as well as the exhibits doubled this year. The knowledge and curiosity of the public as well as the amount of internationally important collectors and curators has increased enormously. Here once can see that the potential of the Asian Pacific market is also reflected in the art market.
ARNDT nearly sold out its booth, with works by Sophie Calle, Nedko Solakov, Gilbert & George, Vik Muniz and Jitish Kallat, mainly to collections in Hongkong, Korea, Singapore and Australia. The colleagues of White Cube, Lehman Maupin, Emmanuel Perrotin and our Korean neighbours announced a similar success. The comment of establishing many new and promising contacts that often circulates on fairs is absolutely true concerning ART HK 2010.
ART HK has the potential to become the central fair and focal point of the art market in Asia and will in the medium term play a similar important role in the Asia-Pacific region, like Art Basel does now for the western art world.
Additionally auctions of Asian modern and contemporary art and international modern, post-war and contemporary art held parallel at Seoul Auctions, Sotheby’s and Christies reported record results at selling quotes of up to 100 %. The otherwise rather local art scene which has seen increase on the gallery level by i.e. Ben Brown, nonetheless possesses some very active protagonists, the highly innovate and in its way one-of-a-kind “Asian Art Archive” as well as the experimental Para-Site Art Space.
Remarkable art comes from almost all regions of Asia: China is unabatedly strong, as is Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and of course India, Pakistan, Iran and many others.

Jitish Kallat's "Untitled (When will you be happy)" at Skulptur i Pilane in Tjorn, Sweden

Kallat's 100 foot long sculpture 'Untitled (When will you be happy)’ is installed at Pilane’s ancient burial grounds and consists of eighteen alphabets, shaped like bones, that appear to be reminiscent of unearthed relics or prehistoric skeletal remains of an extinct animal found during an archeological excavation. The bone and the re-fashioning of the skeletal structure have recurred through Kallat’s sculptural practice over the years. The exhibition is on until 3rd October, 2010.
